Apple started phasing out the 8GB flavor iPhone when it introduced the iPhone 3GS, but the smaller capacity may be making its way back into the new device. Or will it? Rumors have been circulating recently about such an addition, but a page posted on Rogers Wireless’ website seemed to confirm that an 8GB iPhone 3GS is on its way, possibly replacing the $99 iPhone 3G.

The page itself is no longer available, but a screenshot has been posted at Cult of Mac. The screenshot indicates that there’s an 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB version of the device—only the latter of two currently exist. This website slip-up comes a week after another report circulated claiming that Apple and Rogers are preparing to roll out the 8GB iPhone 3GS to replace the 8GB iPhone 3G. “Unconfirmed” screenshots posted by Boy Genius Report claim that Apple plans to run down inventory of the $99 iPhone before introducing the 8GB iPhone 3GS, though there’s no indication that the new version will stay at the same price as the iPhone 3G.

Don’t get too excited, though. Gizmodo spoke with a Rogers representative who insisted the website posting was a “formatting error” and that no such device exists. This is probably true, but it also wouldn’t be surprising if the spokesperson was merely covering the company’s ass. We may never know the answer, so if you’re dying for a cheaper iPhone 3GS, you may have to wait a while.
